Social Team Builders  is a dynamic program that is designed for children in middle school (Grades 6-8). This cutting-edge social thinking summer program will help build the executive functioning skill of social learning by addressing skills such as expected and unexpected behaviors, understanding the hidden rules, group dynamics, perspective taking, social problem solving, developing effective communication skills and regulation of emotions. Largely based on the work of Michelle Garcia Winner and the Center for Social Thinking®, this 3-week social thinking and communication skills program will address the complex issues of social cognition, self-regulation and behavior common to many children with social learning challenges by building a sturdier foundation for making social decisions and fostering social independence. Through the concepts of the social thinking curriculum, along with creative arts activities, role playing and fostering peer directed discussions, participants will explore their own and identify ways to modify their thoughts and related behaviors in various social contexts. Aligned with the Common Core Standards, this program does address the social emotional standards that impact academic expectations of a middle school student.

Participants will:

  1. Learn about the concepts of “flexible thinking” and its role in establishing and maintaining peer relationships and working together in a group.
  2. Develop strategies for building social problem solving and emotional regulation.
  3. Begin to build understanding of “hidden rules” of social behavior and communication.

In order to place group members appropriately, all interested participants must be seen for a social skills consult with the director, Arlene Rubin, M.A., CCC-SLP.

Social Skills Consult:  $80.00

Early Registration:  $1375.00  (By May 31, 2017) Tuition:  $1395.00 (After May 31, 2017)
