Early Intervention for Toddlers

The toddler years (12 months to 3 years old) are a busy and critical time in a child’s development.  Research shows that early detection and treatment of delays involving communication skills can greatly improve a child’s chances of success in school and in life.

While every baby develops at a different pace, most children acquire many of the same communication skills by 18 months of age. If you answer “no” to any of the following questions, it may be an early warning sign that your toddler is at risk for a communication delay and can benefit from services from Good Talking People LLC.

Does your toddler:

  • Follow simple, one-step commands?
  • Understanding and using more words daily?
  • Understand simple verbs, such as “eat” and “sleep”?
  • Understand simple questions (i.e., “Where is your shoe?”)
  • Have trouble being understood?
  • Point to or gesture to things he or she wants?
  • Speak in one– or two–word sentences?
  • Acknowledge the speech of another by giving eye contact, responding or repeating a word?

Once a delay has been identified, it’s never too early to begin speech-language therapy with a certified speech-language pathologist. The staff at Good Talking People can help your child develop critical speech and, language skills. Parents often take advantage of our effective early intervention therapy services in addition to county run early intervention programs. Our Mama, Papa & Me language based socialization program for toddlers and their parents or childcare givers provides an opportunity for small group interaction. Mama, Papa and Me offers developmentally appropriate activities that address play, social, language and speech skills in weekly theme-based lessons.
